1107 E. Freeway Studio
This unique warehouse space is located in north downtown Houston in "The Docks." The building was built in the 1930s & features huge skylights that can be seen from the I-10 freeway. The building served as the original home of Diverseworks and during the last 25 years has been occupied by artist, photographers and conservationist.
The original space had no air conditioning, the floors had countless layers of epoxy paint, and the wood ceiling was in poor condition. The design and renovation of the space developed over the course of several years. A bathroom, office and sleeping loft were built against the back wall and covered with salvaged windows and doors. The open kitchen featured a fridge covered in PEZ dispensers that were attached by magnets. Roberto Cervantes, owner of ARCHI-ARTS, lived and worked in this space for 10 years until be built a studio in nearby Eastwood.
